Proof Through the Night, (Prueba a Través de la Noche), 2017
Fabric, thread, dye, 31 X 56”
I love this country—I was born and raised in Vermont. These are dark times. This is a dark flag. It is still a flag. I am still moved at the sight of it. The American flag is not usually seen in the dark. It is our enduring American belief in freedom and humanity that gives proof now through this night. The work specifically refers issues of secrecy and fear as experienced by the Dreamers and their families. I chose to make an object with fabric and meaning because many anonymous immigrant women work with fabric and fashion. The flag is dark in empathy with their feelings of dread, paranoia, isolation and helplessness.
